Introduction:

Condensed Matter Physics and Materials is the science of the material world around us. The curiosity about the natural world led to queries about condensed-matter systems, such as water, rocks, snow, ice, and how these react to light, heat, and mechanical forces. This hunger for fundamental understanding has been inextricably tied to the desire to manipulate nature by creating new materials to serve human needs. Condensed matter physics is the branch of physics that studies the properties of the large collections of atoms that compose both exotic and ordinary materials. Condensed matter physics and materials advances led in turn to the innovation of devices that now form the basis of much of our technological world, including the transistor, the integrated circuit, the laser, magnetic resonance imaging, liquid-crystal displays, and, more recently, high-efficiency solid-state lighting. At present, it is so important to the modern computer and communicating industries

Why Vancouver, Canada?

Vancouver is a coastal seaport city in Canada, located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. As the most populous city in the province, the 2016 census recorded 631,486 people in the city, up from 603,502 in 2011. There are five public universities in the Greater Vancouver area, the largest being the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU), with a combined enrolment of more than 90,000 undergraduates, graduates, and professional students in 2008. UBC consistently ranks among the 40 best universities in the world, and is among the 20 best public universities.
Vancouver is one of North America’s most under-rated tourist destinations. It is a modern, travel-friendly city with a unique mix of cultures. The relatively mild Pacific Northwest climate and an energetic restaurant and nightlife scene are other features that make this such an attractive city. Majestic mountainsSparkling OceanRainforests and beautiful foliage throughout all four seasons make Vancouver one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Canadians are known for our friendly nature, and Vancouver's citizens take great pride in our welcoming, clean, safe streets - day or night, all year round.

Sessions/Tracks

Track 1: Condensed Matter Physics

Condensed matter physics is a dynamic field of research and it is the biggest sub-turf of current physical science. It studies the macroscopic and microscopic properties of matter and how matter arises from a large number of collaborating atoms and electrons. Condensed matter physics is often motivated by the search for new materials with astonishing properties. The condensed matter is considered one of the largest and most versatile branches of study in physics, primarily due to the diversity of topics and phenomena that are available to study.

Track 3: Soft Condensed Matter Physics

Soft condensed matter physics is a young turf of condensed matter physics. This field is generally described as materials concerned with a strong application on understanding macromolecular assemblies. The constituent particles are condensed by classical mechanics and quantum-mechanical effects in their interactions can be neglected in many structures. Such structures are said to be subject of soft condensed matter physics. The word soft in this context does not have anything to do with the softness of the subsequent material, but it is just a proxy to the classical nature of the particles.

Superconductivity is a phenomenon of exactly zero electrical resistance and expulsion of magnetic flux fields occurring in certain materials are  called superconductors, when cooled below a characteristic critical temperature. Like ferromagnetism and atomic spectral lines, superconductivity is a quantum mechanical phenomenon. It is characterize by the (Meissner  effect), the complete ejection of magnetic field lines from the interior of the superconductor as it transitions into the superconducting state. In a superconductor; the resistance drops abruptly to zero when the material is cooled below its critical temperature.

Meta Materials  and Meta Surfaces are rising research fields nowadays owing to their anomalous and largely tunable properties of light scattering in ultra compact volume. Performances of meta materials and meta surfaces  are dependent on their subwavelength separation and geometric parameters of each meta-atom, a fundamental constituent of meta materials and meta surfaces. Meta atoms are composed of one or more subwavelength nanostructures with noble metals or high index dielectrics. Track 10: Atomic and Molecular Physics

Atomic and molecular physics is the study of atoms and molecules and it’s also the field of specialization in the physics. Atomic physicists study single ion and atom while a molecular physicist even investigates very small molecules that are in their gaseous form. Atomic physicists study isolated and separated ions as well as the atoms along with the excitation and electron arrangements. Addition to this the electronic excitation states which are known from the atoms and molecules which are able to rotate as well as to vibrate. These kind of rotations and vibrations are quantized so that, there are also discrete energy levels. Therefore, the smallest energy differences exist between the different rotational states and the pure rotational spectra are far from the infrared region in which the wavelength is about 30 - 150 µm of the electromagnetic spectrumVibrational spectra are near to the infrared which is about 1 - 5 µm and thus the spectra resulting from electronic transitions which are mostly the ultraviolet regions.

Track 11: Plasma Physics

Plasma is used to describe a comprehensive variety of macroscopically neutral substances containing many interacting free electrons and ionized atoms or molecules, which exhibit collective behavior due to the long-range coulomb forces. Not all media containing charged particles, but can be classified as plasma. For a group of interacting charged and unbiased particles to reveal plasma behavior it must satisfy certain conditions, or criteria, for plasma existence. Although plasmas in local thermodynamic equilibrium are found in many places in nature, as is the case for many astrophysical types of plasma, they are not very common in the laboratory. Plasmas can also be generated by ionization processes that raise the degree of ionization much above its thermal properties. There are many different methods of creating plasma in the laboratory and depending upon the method  the plasma may have high or low density, high or low temperature, it may be steady or transient, stable or unstable, etc

Track 12: Advanced Ceramic Materials

Advanced ceramics materials, substances and processes used in the advancement and manufacture of ceramic materials that exhibit special properties. A ceramic material is a non-metallic, inorganic, often crystalline oxidenitride material. Some elements like carbon or silicon may be considered as ceramics. Ceramic materials are hard and strong in compression, weak in shearing and tension. They resist chemical erosion that occurs in other materials subjected to acidic or caustic environments. Ceramics generally can withstand very high temperatures.

Track 14: Astrophysics and Cosmology

Astrophysics is also called as  particle astrophysics and it is the branch of particle physics that studies the elementary particles of astronomical origin and it also studies that how the astrophysics and cosmology are inter related. In the quantum world, the particle physicists have developed a standard model to describe the properties of matter. This model particularly explains how the particles are made from two or three quarks. The three of the fundamental forces of physics and also the quarks and leptons are the main components of this standard model. To describe the bulk properties of the universe, cosmologists have developed a standard model. The term Cosmology is the study of the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. In other terms cosmology is scientifically and scholarly the study of the origin, large-scale structures and dynamics.

Track 18: Material Science & Engineering

The interdisciplinary field of materials science which is also known as materials science and engineering, involves the discovery and design of new materials, with an emphasis on solids. The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the Enlightenment, when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistryphysics, and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy. Materials science still incorporates elements of physics, chemistry, and engineering. As such, the field was long considered by academic institutions as a sub-field of these related fields.

Market Analysis:

As America entered the Cold War, approximately 50% of physics Ph.D. graduates entered academia, says Roman Czujko, director of the Statistical Research Center at the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in College Park, Maryland, citing AIP statistics. The proportion of those taking postdocs is unknown, but it probably was small. Most of the rest went to private industry, with a few going to work in national labs, for nonprofit organizations, or in sundry occupations. By 1979, about 45% of physics Ph.D. graduates were taking postdoc positions, and some 55% held permanent jobs within a year of graduating. Those proportions indicate a healthy workforce, with competitive job offerings and a balance between basic research and applications, Czujko says. Today that balance has changed. According to AIP data, in 2010 the number of physics bachelor's degrees and Ph.D.s awarded in the United States set or equaled respective all-time highs. One year after finishing their Ph.D.s, 60% of physicists were in postdocs. Nearly half of all physicists work in industry, and only about 35% work in academia. This reflects two trends, Czujko says: a relative decline in the number of tenure-track academic jobs in most physics fields, and increasing opportunities in certain fields for math-savvy physicists. The photovoltaics market is expected to grow from $89.52 billion in 2013 to $345.59 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 18.30% between 2014 and 2020. In terms of geography, APAC is expected to hold the major market share at 53.25% in 2013, followed by Europe at 23.52%. The key driving factor behind this would be the presence of the major players in the region and increasing government support.
